5 Things to Know When Planning for Your Postpartum Journey

Let’s be honest: planning for life after baby can feel a little like packing for a trip you’ve never taken — one where the destination is beautiful but exhausting, the itinerary is unpredictable, and the dress code is mostly robes and top knots.

You're not alone. Every week, families come to Alma Care with thoughtful, important questions as they begin preparing for this new chapter. And after supporting hundreds of families, we’ve noticed the same five questions come up again and again.

If you’re starting to think about what postpartum care could look like for you, here’s what you need to know:

1. When should we start planning care?

The short answer? Sooner than you think.

The earlier you begin planning, the more options you'll have — especially when it comes to securing your dream team of Postnatal Care Specialists. Many families begin curating their care plan as early as the second trimester (right around the time baby registries start to feel real and your back starts to ache).

2. What is a Postnatal Care Specialist, anyway?

They’re more than just an extra set of hands — they’re the expert support system you deserve.

Our Postnatal Care Specialists are highly trained professionals in maternal health, newborn care, and the emotional landscape of early parenthood. With backgrounds ranging from doulas and nursing to midwifery, lactation and infant development, they offer holistic, whole-family care — with a particular focus on you.

From the moment they walk in, they’re tuned into what’s needed — whether that’s helping baby latch, warming up a nourishing meal, guiding you through infant soothing techniques, or simply noticing when you need a moment to rest, cry, or just be.

They’re educators and advocates. They’ll guide you through feeding, newborn sleep, bathing, swaddling, and developmental milestones — all while supporting your healing body and mind. Their care is proactive and intuitive, always grounded in the belief that a supported mother is at the heart of a thriving family.

Physical recovery. Mental health. Emotional wellbeing. Infant care education. All of it — wrapped in expert, compassionate care that meets you exactly where you are.

3. How much care will I actually need?

This depends on your goals — but here’s the truth: even superheroes need support. Our most popular option is the One-Month Signature Package, which includes overnight and daytime care, broths and teas, in-home massage, and access to lactation and mental health specialists.

It’s comprehensive, it’s calming, and it’s designed to support you during the most crucial weeks of recovery. Overnight care gives you the gift of sleep, while daytime care helps you catch your breath, learn the ropes, and get hands-on help with feeding, infant care, and your own healing.

4. Is postpartum care covered by insurance or benefits?

Often, yes. Many of our services are eligible for reimbursement through extended health benefits. This includes care provided by professionals like Registered Nurses (RNs), Certified Doulas, Registered Social Workers (RSWs), Lactation Consultants, and more.

We’re happy to walk you through your options and provide the paperwork you’ll need to submit a predetermination and claim.

5. How are Alma’s Postnatal Care Specialists vetted?

Very thoroughly. Your family’s safety and comfort are our top priority — which is why we go far beyond a simple resume review.

Every member of our care team is hand-selected through a rigorous process that includes:

  • A three-stage interview with our Clinical and Care teams

  • Two glowing professional references

  • Vulnerable Sector and Police Background Checks

  • Infant CPR Certification

  • Professional and liability insurance

  • A full online and in-person onboarding, focused on postpartum recovery, newborn care, and the Alma approach

And we don’t stop there. Weekly family check-ins give us real-time insights and opportunities for coaching and continued development. Our standard is excellence — and your care experience should reflect that from day one.

The bottom line

You don’t have to figure it all out alone. We’re here to make sure you feel supported, informed, and deeply cared for — because parenthood may be unpredictable, but your care shouldn’t be.
