a letter from our founder
The way postpartum is treated in North America is very different from other cultures in the world. Having a Singaporean mother, I was very familiar with the Chinese tradition of zuo yue ze, or "sitting the month". This is a common practice in China and Asian cultures, whereby the mother rests for 30 to 40 days postpartum and there's a huge focus placed on recovery. When you eat well, sleep well, and give the body what it needs it’s scientifically proven that the mother can give her baby what it needs. Sleeping well once you've had a baby? Seems like a very foreign concept to most of us.

I was lucky enough to experience this with both my babies. Having the proper support in place to help me recover, I was eased into postpartum life, and it wasn't something I had to suffer through on my own. It was a special experience where I was taken care of and was able to give all my energy to my babies. Sharing this with many of my friends and hearing about their experiences pushed me to dig deeper. Sadly, there is not a lot of support for mothers who experience postpartum.

I wanted to be a part of the necessary change to postpartum care. With my experience of co-founding Greenhouse, a cold-pressed juice company, I know how important it is to be proactive with our health. That what we put into our bodies can make a huge difference. I think the same care and proactive nature should extend to postpartum care.
